Wednesday, June 18th, 2025 SOAR returned to the Rockwall Climbing Center at Whitman College after multiple requests from our members. This event became really popular after our first visit over six months ago, and there were many who were eager to return or weren't able to attend the first time.
To avoid the chaos of having all of our participants waiting or climbing simultaneously, we decided to schedule two sessions each lasting one-and-a-half hours. This way the building was less crowded and participants could choose which time worked best for them. Those who had visited previously were allowed to gear up and begin climbing. Those who were new to the facility had to be registered into their system and watch a brief safety video first before climbing.
Although some chose to climb using a harness and ropes, the most popular method of climbing became the Wellman Spreader. This device allowed you to strap yourself into a chair and pull down on a lever to begin ascending using arm strength. Participants were lining up to use this device and patiently waiting for their chance to race to the top. The Wellman Spreader was also a spectacular alternative for those who weren't able to climb in the traditional method.
It was wonderful to see our participants engaging in this activity for a variety of reasons - to experience something new, face their fear of heights, or to climb higher than they did before. It was an encouraging environment, and all our participants were cheering for one another throughout the entire event. Witnessing this was deeply satisfying, as we strive to foster a community that's inclusive and supportive of each other. The Whitman Climbing Center staff did an excellent job making everyone feel safe, welcomed, and informed.
At 4:00 pm it was time for our descent. We removed all our climbing equipment, and everyone returned home for some much needed rest. If we ever decide to make our ascent once again, you know we’ll shout it from the mountaintops. We’re grateful for the Whitman College Climbing Center Staff for once again providing us with this amazing opportunity.
