Haley Goes to Regionals!

Haley goes to Regionals!

Haley got the opportunity to go to the Special Olympics regional track meet for the first time this past May and I got the opportunity to be a chaperone with Haley. We had so much fun. The coaches Tracy Gaines and Jennifer Johnson are so much fun and well organized. It is so nice to ride up to Cheney as a team together and hear the chatter from the athletes. The athletes sat together at meals and went to the street dance together that they were having in downtown Cheney. The day of the meet was met with excitement from all as the teams warmed up. Some of the athletes who have attended regionals and other meets before would greet and encourage the other athletes from other teams.

Haley made friends with other athletes from across the region as well. The whole experience was well organized and so positive. Haley received two third place medals in the 50 yard dash and the 100 yard dash. I want to share a word about our local coaches, volunteers and athletes. Tracy and Jennifer go above and beyond for those who participate in Special Olympics whether it is track, bowling, and basketball. They are so generous with their time and talents and provide such a fun, safe and positive environment for all who participate. I am very happy to work with such giving, kind and warm women who really go above and beyond for their athletes and volunteers. I have seen athletes grow over the years in confidence and leadership skills.

If your child has not tried Special Olympics before, I encourage you to check it out.  It is a place of inclusion, friendships, confidence building and friendly competition. If you want to support Special Olympics financially come check out the Cop on Top fundraiser held on July 12th at Hot Mama’s Coffee on Pine St. This helps pay for uniforms, equipment, travel costs, and any other expenses so that athletes can participate for free.
